Patent databasesA number of patent databases are available to the public on the Internet. The most extensive database is Espacenet, being updated by the European Patent Office (EPO). On Esp@cenet it is possible to search bibliographic data but not full-text documents. After creating a search profile, you will be able to retrieve relevant data from more than 72 countries. The database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office gives access to all patents published and granted in the USA. This database allows you to search full-text documents limiting the number of search results. Please note that a patent application is not included in the database until after the date of publication, i.e. 18 months after the date of filing. Therefore, a patentability search should not be used to determine conclusively whether your idea can be patented. There is always a risk that your search profile was not good enough or that someone else filed a patent application on the same invention within the past 18 months. Patent agencies have access to more advanced patent databases making it possible to create a more complex search profile and search full-text documents. Therefore, we recommend that your patentability search should be followed by a search conducted by Patentgruppen. We help you identify any patents or other publications relevant to the novelty of your invention. |
